2 Birds With 1 Stone: Per the Advice of the Prof.
Here's a small tale I thought I'd share:
I made an edit at Wikipedia today (10/01/07) for the first time ever. I was counting a large amount of change and an Idaho state quarter caught my eye. It had the phrase "Esto perpetua" inscribed upon it. I wondered what this meant exactly. In Spanish, "Esto" means "this" so I assumed the Latin meaning was probably about the same. Perpetua = perpetual. "This forever"? I figured that it roughly meant "Long Live Idaho". So I searched for the phrase on... Ask.com (b/c Googlewatch scared me a little) and then clicked on a link to Wikipedia. According to the Wikipedia article, a proper translation would be "Let it be perpetual" or "Let it be forever". Anyway, the article stated that this motto was found on the BACK of the quarter when, in fact, it was inscribed on the FRONT. So I corrected that. Thank you, thank you. Just tryin' to do my part.
Unfortunately, I've also been advised by the Prof. that this does not count towards one of my class assignments and I'll still need to complete a PROFESSIONAL wiki edit. Update forthcoming.

Is the world spinning?
Calling information overload. I repeat, calling information overload.
I've just been reading an introduction to another "session" of class on how content on the Web continues to move from text to more and more audio/visual content. Apparently, the talking computers are coming...
Great. Bring 'em. As long as they don't speak unless spoken to.
I'm quite contrary to the idea of blogging. Maybe because I'm a man hidin' in my man cave watchin' football all day. So, of course, it then becomes a requirement of one of my courses. That ought to answer your question as to why I have a blog if I'm philosophically opposed to it. I wanted to title this blog, "Only Because I Have To", but didn't. Apparently, blogging is 'old hat' now and I'm late to the party (although I did bring a bottle of wine and a chocolate babka).
Besides podcasting we now have blogcasting, slidecasting and videocasting. I listened to some examples of blogcasting (which, through use of an app. such as Talkr, turns the text of your blog into audio, a.k.a your text read aloud by a programmed human voice) and I would prefer to hear the blogger's own voice and not a generic woman's voice. That is probably where it is headed anyway but this tool needs some work on replicating human speech. It's choppy and automated (for obvious reason). And videocasting? Isn't that what YouTube is for?
I've come up with another term to be applied here: "typecasting."

My bills are miscellaneous.
Yes, they are. This was one real life example that came to mind as I continued reading the Weinberger text. When I say, 'my bills are miscellaneous', I actually mean their location. The book talks about how we naturally organize and categorize things into specific places. Dishes, clothes, groceries, chemicals, cleaners, towels, DVDs, etc. We sort through our mail, throw the junk mail in the trash, proudly display greeting cards on the mantle, put bills in a specific drawer or rack, and maybe set aside the ads and catalogs to look through later. My bills do not have a specific drawer to go into, or even an accordion-style folder to be neatly arranged by due date. A few bills might get lumped together on my bedroom floor while one may be folded up and placed in my wallet as a reminder for prompt payment. Oh, look. There's one on my kitchen counter. And another on the couch. I won't lie, though. Eventually I try to round them all up and arrange them into a pile according to their due dates. Odds are I've already paid a couple of them by then.
This also got me thinking about what things we do place in miscellaneous locations (granted, they're multiple items). Tissues came to mind right off the bat. You're probably gonna have a box in the living room, the bedroom, and the bathroom. If you've got bad allergies then there's probably some in your pocket at all times. Candles was another item I thought of. Candles can go wherever tissues go. The kitchen, the basement, the bathroom, the living room, the garage, etc.

Ship- Shape and Sea- Worthy
So far so good. My blog is officially online after much pre-viz, R&D, and a thorough battery of tests and system tweaks. So, welcome to my blog (version 1.0).
The main goal of this blog is to simply fulfill a requirement of one of my graduate courses. That is, to create and maintain a blog detailing the wisdom, insight, and knowledge gained throughout this semester. That should be easy enough as I am still only dipping my toes into the vast waters of Library and Information Studies. I do not know how deep the waters are but I'm slowly lowering myself down, feeling around for sure footing.
